Mission Moroto Stories: Mercy’s Chair
As Rebekah would drive down the road from Rupa Village to Mission Moroto, she would often notice a little girl sitting in the dirt in the yard of one of the houses. The little girl had no feet, but she always had the biggest smile and would wave and wave as Rebekah went by. Rebekah would say out loud, “We need to help that girl someday.”
Then came the day when Rebekah was asked by the girl’s relatives to help her, so she brought her to Mission Moroto. Her name is Mercy, and she is the cutest thing ever!
Mercy has no feet and no feeling from her waist down, so she cannot control her bladder or bowels and is constantly leaking fluids. The team would sit her on a blanket on the ground so she could play and visit with the other children, but the odors were intense, and she always had to be carried anywhere she needed to go.
One night, Papa Matthew was awakened with the thought, “We need to get her a wheelchair with a bedpan attached. Surely there is such a thing.” He prayed about it and fell back to sleep.
The next morning, he Googled “wheelchair with bedpan,” and sure enough, there was such a thing! He took a screenshot and sent it to his friend in Kampala, asking, “Can you find one of these? Do they have them in Uganda?”
The next day, his friend wrote back, “Yes, I have found one.”
So Papa Matthew sent the money, his friend bought the wheelchair, and he put it on a bus to Moroto.
The team was so happy, and Mercy was thrilled with her new chair! Now the children can push her all over the compound, and she even goes to school. We had the contractor build ramps at the church and the school so she could easily get in and out.
Mercy was the smiliest little person ever even before she got her chair, but she really has a big smile now!
